In a past life, I was a fish or perhaps a mermaid. A mermaid is definitely the millennial answer right now. When planning a trip to an island, I am always looking for an underwater adventure. Snorkeling is bare minimum but my ultimate goal is to go swimming with sharks. With this in mind, I am always packing my own snorkel gear.
I might leave a few things out (never skincare products) but my own snorkel gear and floaties make trips to the Caribbean and European islands like the Cyclades in Greece. It’s not that companies in these places don’t have their own; I just prefer to bring mine because I know it’s clean and hasn’t been used by anyone else.
There’s another benefit to this, if you end up in a less than ideal situation, you know you have gear that fits. In my case, I wore a children’s xxs life jacket in Mexico. In one Caribbean Island, they didn’t have sizes beyond adult and child so you can imagine finding a mask that fits properly.
Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Amazon and many other retailers carry Speedo and trusted brands. I’ve found them for cheap prices and left them on the island because of all the sand without feeling too bad about wasting money. They can be donated depending on where you’re staying. Many places can use them.
